i have absolutely loved this illustrator for so many years. as far as i know she is completely anonymous so i don't actually know her name but on social media she goes by 'exotic cancer'. she has a website and she has a rather large following on her instagram. her art work is raw and screams feminism to me. she works as a stripper along side being an illustrator and a lot of her works show an insight to what its like to work in the sex industry. the good, bad, ugly and honest.
all of the women she draws have arm, leg and pubic hair/ stubble. she doesn't make the women look like the medias ideal cookie cutter opinion of 'pretty' and i absolutely love that.
she uses very pretty and 'feminine' colours; lots of pastel pinks and purples and the images themselves contrast that due to their very blunt and thought provoking nature.
she has an online shop and sells not only her prints but also clothing, colouring books and even a branded butt plug!
i am very passionate about women feeling comfortable with sex and their own bodies and her art really captures that for me.
sex work is work. women have body hair. women get periods. all of these things shouldn't be looked down upon and women shouldn't feel ashamed about any of the above.
she has had a lot of issues with instagram due to her work being fairly explicit and has had her account deleted before. there is also a lot of users who do not like her work. the people who do not like her work are usually the ones who disagree with sex work as a job. a lot of the time in her illustrations she will show the men from strip clubs she has worked at asking silly questions or other girls who 'don't agree' with sex work in a stupid light. i think its funny that she's making light of the shitty parts of her job and making other people laugh as well.
one of my favourite ongoing illustration she does is 'honest tinder profiles'. she draws someones profile picture and then puts a stereotypical and comedic bio.
the one thing i plan on taking on board from exotic cancers work is to draw things that you believe in and are passionate about. and to also draw things from life experiences. i would hope that one day i have a distinctive style and website where i can sell such a range of products just as she does.. who knows, maybe one day ill make my own brand of butt plug.
