while on the course at the university of Portsmouth; myself and the rest of the first year students had a few talks and tours with studios in Portsmouth. we spoke to Hotwalls studios and also Seadog studio.
one thing i have taken on board from what i have learned so far is that its hard to make a consistent and reliable income as just a freelance illustrator. some months may be great but you may also have dry spells where you get no jobs or commissions.
i did ideally want to be totally freelance but seeing the people at Seadog working especially made me excited to experience what it would be like! i still have very little experience with printing but while we did our online zoom class we were shown around the studio and also shown briefly a print being made on a shirt! the idea of making not only my own prints but also my own clothing makes me pretty damn excited. i have also thought about a career in tattooing and i am friends with a fair amount of tattoo artists but its always nice to have options.
the thing i love about the idea of working in a studio is theres such a broad topic of illustration. from making prints, clothing, pottery and anything creative really! i also like the idea of working around other people who have the same passion as me. i feel thats a good way for me to grow as an artist and as a person as well.
its still early days and i have plenty of time to decide what i want to do but studio work has definitely interested me and i will certainly be looking into it more as i develop my skills as an illustrator.
